    Q. You played with Lupe Fiasco at the House of Blues this spring and impressed the crowd with your combination of sounds and your musicianship. Why is having a live band so important, since so many people at your level are happy to tour with just a DJ or rap or sing to prerecorded tracks?

    A. I’ll tell you, I got spoiled when I did the “Hip Hop Live!’’ tour [in 2008] with David Banner and Talib Kweli. Ever since then, I said this is the way to go! And the fact that it’s hip-hop, it showed me that hip-hop and live music can be incorporated together.

    Q. The legend is that the OutKast song “B.O.B.’’ is the inspiration for your stage name, is that true?

    A. I’ve heard that! I don’t know where that [idea] came from. Actually I got my name from an artist in the Bay Area named Willie Joe like four years ago, a little bit prior to me getting signed. We were outside of a club and of course he knew my name was Bobby, and one day he just called me, “Yo B-O-B,’’ and I was like, “Oh man, that’s it!’’ and it stuck.

    Q. So what’s up with all the great music coming out of Atlanta?

    A. I think it’s a combination of its geographical location and soul food. We eat the culture and the culture’s in the food, and so it comes out in the music.
